Saturday 7th November 3:00pm

Presented on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, this programme explores humanity’s enduring search for meaning and peace. These works speak across faiths and philosophies, reflecting universal questions of sacrifice, destiny, loss and renewal. Together they offer a moving and inclusive meditation on remembrance and light.

"Lux aeterna" is a Latin phrase that translates to "eternal light". Light is a symbol shared by many faiths, cultures and philosophies. This programme explores that common thread through music that reflects on remembrance and eternal peace. From Brahms’s humanistic vision to McDowall’s contemporary setting of texts from several religious traditions, these works offer an inclusive and deeply moving journey from contemplation towards hope.

2026 - 2027 Season

In September 2026 we proudly launch our fourth season under the direction of Anthony Gray. Since he joined us in September 2023 Anthony has taken us on a journey that has included many of our all-time favourites (Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Verdi’s Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana) as well as some rediscovered masterpieces such as Dvořák’s Stabat Mater. We have welcomed living composers Philip Wilby and Matthew Coleridge and celebrated their music, while fostering new opportunities for choral writing via our composition competition. Along the way, we even made an appearance on national television with Gareth Malone! This season will include Rossini's fascinating late masterpiece Petite Messe Solennelle, featuring accordionist Valerie Barr, and in summer 2027 a spotlight on Baroque music with the magnificent instrumentalists of Baroque in the North. As always, we will step in to Christmas 2026 with our annual candlelit Messiah – our 208th consecutive performance - and a rousing evening of carols and brass with Black Dyke Band.

We are hiring Choral Scholars!

We are delighted to offer paid choral scholarships for the 2026–27 season. These scholarships are ideal for young singers looking to develop their vocal technique, musicianship, and confidence within a supportive, ambitious choral environment. Scholars will receive personal coaching from our Artistic Director and Conductor, Anthony Gray, and may also have opportunities to develop wider musical skills such as conducting, section leading, or coaching small groups. There is no age limit, though the scheme will particularly suit sixth-form, undergraduate, or postgraduate students. There is no closing date so it this looks like you, get in touch!
